GOVERNMENT
aid and support will continue to be given to national car makers Proton and
Perodua as they are regarded as national projects which contribute towards the
development of the local automotive industry, says International Trade and
Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
He said
Proton had sold almost 3.6 million units of vehicles up to September this year,
while Perodua sold almost 2.4 million vehicles as at September this year, since
the Kancil model was introduced in 1994.
In a
written reply to Lim Lip Eng
(DAP-Segambut), Mustapa said assistance will also be extended to other
qualified companies that manufacture or assemble automobiles, regardless of
whether they are national car makers or otherwise.
Lim had
asked the minister to provide the sales volume of car models produced by Proton
and Perodua and whether the Government should continue to be involved in the
two companies.
For
Proton, Mustapa said the Iswara model recorded the highest number of sales with
1.139 million units sold since it was introduced to the market in 1985.
