The Following Took Place between 26 & 27 Feb 2009

26.2.09 (morning) - Works Minister Mohd Zin announced toll increases for 5 highways which were to have taken effect on 1.3.2009.

26.2.09 (noon) - Public outcry against the announcement.

26.2.09 (late afternoon) - PM Abdullah Badawi called for a review of the decision following a public outcry.

27.2.09 - DPM Najib led Cabinet decided that the toll increases would be put off indefinitely.

27.2.09 (after Cabinet meeting) - Works Minister said the Cabinet decided to rescind its Feb 11 decision & PM also said the Cabinet’s new decision was made due to the people’s economic hardship.

Conclusion - 2 weeks ago, our “public-minded” & “always on the ground to keep in touch with the rakyat” Ministers thought that the people did not face any economic hardship. But in less than 24 hours after the increase in toll announcement on 26.2.09, the same group of Ministers overturned their early decision on the ground that they are now “enlightened” by the people of their economic hardship. MCA president cum Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat, why the silence when the decision was made 2 weeks ago?

What Umno Youth & IGP Said & What the Law says

I deny to the claim by umno youth members which is reported in The Star that “I came and, after some heated words, pushed them.” One of them said in the report, “he spoke nicely to Karpal Singh but it was someone else who was rude,” however Karpal said "They were very unruly and refused to let me leave." On one hand, they said “they had gone to Parliament on their own without any prior planning.” On the other hand, they said “they had a smoke while waiting for Karpal outside the tower block.” OxyMORONS?

Also in The Star, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) said “the police had no authority or jurisdiction to enter or intervene during the fracas.” However the law in this land pursuant to 124 of the Penal Code says “Whoever, with the intention of inducing or compelling or attempting to induce or compel a member of Parliament to exercise or refrain from exercising in any manner the lawful powers of such member, assaults or wrongfully restrains, or attempts wrongfully to restrain, or ..., such member shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 7 years, and shall also be liable to fine.” On top of that, the Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat says “Order 1(e): Motion directing the IGP to provide free passage to Members of Parliament.” Now, can anyone say the IGP is still fit to be the No. 1 law enforcer?

'Singh is King' mobbed, MP claims assault (updated)

Malaysiakini | S Pathmawathy | Feb 26, 09 2:57pm

A day after proclaiming that 'Singh is King', DAP veteran Karpal Singh finds himself mobbed by a group of angry Umno Youth members at the Parliament lobby.

This followed Karpal's accusation yesterday that the 'celaka' (damn) Umno Youth was responsible for the death threat and live bullets he had received via mail last week.

Karpal had also warned Umno Youth not to play games with him and likened himself to the recent Bollywood blockbuster 'Singh is Kinng'.

At about 2.30pm, the wheelchair-bound politician was surrounded by about 30 Umno Youth members, who prevented him from entering the Dewan Rakyat.

Karpal then telephoned fellow DAP MP Fong Po Kuan, who arrived with a 'rescue team' comprising DAP MPs to save their chairperson.

During the ensuing drama, which saw a little shoving and pushing, DAP MP for Segambut Lim Lip Eng claimed that he was assaulted.

According to Lim, he was hit a number of times on the face and his body.

The opposition parliamentarians also complained that security personnel did not intervene until they made noise.

In an immediate reaction, House speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia expressed regret over the incident, which he said was a first in Parliament.

The speaker added that he would ask the Home Ministry to investigate the matter and vowed that such incidents would not recur.

Meanwhile, a defiant Karpal later declared: "I might be in a wheelchair but I will not be cowed or intimidated by anyone."

BN Backbenchers Club chairperson Tiong King Sing later told reporters that all 22 members of the unruly crowd have been arrested by the police from Bukit Aman.

However, this could not be confirmed with the police.

He also apologised to Karpal over the incident and said that he would urge the speaker to limit the entry of political party supporters into the House.

Another Close Case of Police Brutality

Below is my oral question to Parliament and the answer I got on 18.2.2009:

Some backgrounds: Human Rights Commission of Malaysia has on 7.1.2009 found that the police and Federal Reserve Unit used excessive force on the four Chinese youths (A Toothless Tiger?). Deputy Inspector General of police Tan Sri Ismail said on 10.1.2009 action will be taken on those responsible for the excessive use of force by law enforcement personnel (Mere Talk). MCA lawyers also said they will help the victims (Sheer Act). And now, the minister said NO CASE.
